Description

1800 C-1, B-1 Half Cent, MS63 Red and Brown

1800 1/2 C C-1, B-1, R.1, MS63 Red and Brown PCGS. CAC. Breen Die State IV, Manley Die State 4.0. This is the usual die state for 1800 half cents, with the dies lapped and advanced die rust on the reverse. Mint State 1800 half cents are plentiful, but mostly toned to medium brown. Despite Walter Breen's comment in his Half Cent Encyclopedia that many mint red specimens survive from a hoard discovered in the 1930s, it is our experience that examples with substantial mint red are highly elusive. About half of the original mint red survives on this piece, with the balance displaying light olive-brown toning. A small surface blemish interrupts the luster on the obverse, but otherwise, both sides are essentially free of marks. This is a gorgeous piece for an advanced half cent specialist or first-year type collector. Our EAC grade MS63. Population: 9 in 63 Red and Brown, 6 finer. CAC: 4 in 63, 2 finer (11/17).
