1800 Half Cent, MS64+ Red and Brown
C-1, B-1, Ex: Missouri Cabinet

1800 1/2 C C-1, B-1, R.1, MS64+ Red and Brown PCGS. CAC. Ex: Missouri Cabinet. Robert Scot's Draped Bust design made its half cent debut on the 1800 issue, supplanting the much-maligned Liberty Cap obverse motif. A single die marriage produced the entire 202,908-piece production. Most of the mintage was struck on high-quality planchets supplied by England's Matthew Boulton & Company. This high-end near-Gem example is perhaps the best-known and finest among those pieces designated Red or Red and Brown. It is tied with one other Red and Brown example at PCGS by virtue of its Plus award, with an illustrious pedigree and outstanding eye appeal. CAC endorsement adds to its resume. Struck from a middle die state (Manley die state 3.0), the coin features a complete curl immediately left of the date, and a thin rim cud above LIB in LIBERTY. Its portrait is thinly doubled. Lustrous mint red color mellows to imperial-blue overtones, with substantial areas of original mint color remaining throughout both sides. A small planchet flaw or strike-through above the bust tip pedigrees this exceptional half cent. PCGS Population: 2 in 64 (2 in 64+) Red and Brown, 0 finer (9/22).
