Description

1803 Draped Bust Half Cent, MS64 Brown
Popular C-3, B-3 Variety

1803 1/2 C Widely Spaced 3, C-3, B-3, R.1, MS64 Brown PCGS. CAC. Manley Die State 4.0. Mint records indicate 92,000 Draped Bust half cents were struck in 1803, and four die varieties are known for the date. This coin represents the B-3 variety, with the 0 and 3 in the date widely spaced and the zeros in the fraction very close on the reverse. The B-3 is an available variety in most grades, but it is conditionally rare at the MS64 level.

The present coin is an attractive Choice example, with smooth chocolate-brown surfaces and iridescent mint luster. The design elements are well-detailed, with a touch of softness on the upper wreath that is often seen on examples of this die state. A slight bulge developed in the area of the date on the obverse, which is probably related to the weaker strike on the wreath. An extensive die crack is visible on the reverse, from the rim through the second T in States, F in HALF, and the wreath, but the clash marks seen in earlier states on the obverse are very faint, probably due to lapping. Population: 3 in 64 (1 in 64+) Brown, 0 finer (2/25).
