1804 Half Cent, XF45
Plain 4, No Stems, C-13
Double Struck, Davy Collection
Breen Plate Coin

1804 1/2 C Plain 4, No Stems, C-13, B-10, R.1 -- Double Struck, Second Strike 35% Off Center -- XF45 PCGS. Ex: Davy Collection. Manley Die State 2.0. Our EAC grade VF25. A medium brown example with light wear, minimal marks, and moderate granularity near the date. The present mint error is photographed in the Whoops! section, page 480, of the Breen Half Cent Encyclopedia. It was part of the most famous holding of half cent errors, the "Davy" Collection. The coin is double struck, described by Bob Grellman in the Goldberg catalog as:

"The first strike was normal and centered on the planchet. The struck half cent then failed to eject completely as a new blank planchet was partially inserted into the press. The result was a strike about 35% off center on the obverse leaving a strong impression of LIB behind the portrait. The reverse has a deep indent from the blank planchet affecting UNIT."

Ex: Shelly Schultz, ANA (7/1981); Davy Collection; Pre-Long Beach (Ira & Larry Goldberg, 9/2010), lot 176.
