Description
Outstanding 1804 C-7 Half Cent, AU50
1804 1/2 C Spiked Chin AU50 PCGS. C-7, B-5, High R.4. Breen Die State VIII. Manley Die State 7.0. Perhaps the best known 1804 Spiked Chin half cent variety is Cohen-6, with a nearly unlimited number of die states identified today. Although less well known, C-7 also has many amazing reverse die states from perfect to heavily broken. This example is a later die state, and "known only in lower grades" according to Ron Manley. In 1996 Manley conducted a survey of the variety, locating 100 examples, including 17 of the present die state. The grades of those 17 pieces ranged from Good 4 to VF20, with only four pieces better than VG.Both sides of this specimen have bold design details, with the sharpness of XF45 or finer. This piece may have been cleaned and recolored, but exhibits lovely cinnamon and steel-brown surfaces. Although both sides have scattered pit marks and minor scratches, the overall appearance is excellent. It may be one of the finest known for the die state, and ranks high among all known C-7 half cents. MRB VF20.(Registry values: P4)
