Description

1804 C-8 Half Cent, MS65 Brown
Sumptuously Lustrous Spiked Chin

1804 1/2 C Spiked Chin, C-8, B-7, R.1, MS65 Brown NGC. Lustrous chocolate-brown surfaces contain hints of steel-brown, biscuit, and steel-blue, making wonderfully varied coloration that is stunningly eye appealing. All details are fully impressed. The so-called "Spiked Chin" obverse was caused by die damage, likely from a screw that fell off the press and into the coining chamber. The damage happened early in the obverse's first use, on C-3/5, but went on to produce C-7, C-6, and C-8 afterwards, making it the most prolific 1804 obverse die.
