    Description

Condition Census B-2, C-2 1805 Small 5, Stems Half Cent

1805 1/2 C Small 5, Stems Fine 12 Corroded. B-2, C-2, R.6. An example of the rare Breen-2 variety, and among the finest known examples. Medium brown and attractive overall, it displays unfortunate light corrosion on the upper half of Liberty's portrait and in the right obverse field, and two tiny corrosion spots on the reverse in the center. The obverse has a series of several small digs or short scratches on Liberty's bust and neck, but these are not readily noticeable without close examination, and they should serve as useful pedigree identifiers in the future. There is also a small rim bump at 4 o'clock on the obverse, and a tiny dig in the right reverse field below the A in AMERICA. The denomination on the reverse has stronger definition than usual for this variety, and the die characteristics are easily distinguishable. The balance of the surfaces are glossy and smooth.
Interestingly, this piece was consigned by a long-time collector as a type example of the Draped Bust design! A more common variety would have served the purpose filled by this specimen, but to the delight of the consignor and our cataloging staff, it proved to be a very special coin. It is estimated that approximately 30 pieces are known from this die combination, the rarer of the two 1805 Small 5, Stems varieties. Most survivors, however, are in lower grades. While this example is not problem-free, it is attractive overall, and remains a well detailed example of this highly sought after variety. Certain to generate considerable interest among students and specialists of the early copper series. (NGC ID# 222H, PCGS# 1087)
