Description

Pleasing C-3 1805 Small 5, Stems Half Cent, VG10

1805 1/2 C Small 5, Stems VG10 NGC. C-3, B-3, R.4. The 1805 half cents offer an interesting paradox: while the Small 5, Stems variety is the only one of the Guide Book subdivisions to encompass multiple die pairs, the C-2 and C-3 combined are substantially rarer than either the Small 5, No Stems or Large 5, Stems variants. While rated R.4, the 1805 C-3 half cent is an important condition rarity among the small early coppers. Even though more than 100 examples of the variety survive, the finest known is only XF40, and the top six drop to Fine 12. This piece is not far from that Condition Census. Though substantially worn, it is readily pleasing with smooth cherrywood and tan surfaces. Typical weakness at the CE of CENT. EAC 7.(Registry values: P5)
