Description
Important 1805 C-3 Small 5, Stems Half Cent
1805 1/2 C Small 5, With Stems. C-3, B-3, R.4. Die State 2--Improperly Cleaned--NCS. VG Details. VG7 EAC. Small, centered 5; Highest leaf below center of S. The later die state of this variety with a prominent bulge in the right obverse field. The obverse is the same die that was earlier used for Cohen-2, the reverse was used later for Cohen-4. Distinguishing between this plentiful Small 5, Stems variety and the rarer C-2 can be done by several features on the reverse. Breen recorded nine differences, but the easiest is comparison of the location of the berry inside the right wreath next to F in HALF. On this variety, the berry is entirely above the top of that letter. On the rare C-2 die marriage, only half the berry is above the top of that letter.Perhaps NCS is correct in their determination that this coin has been improperly cleaned. However, we feel that such a description is unnecessarily harsh. The surfaces have lovely olive-brown color with pale blue accents. This example is much nicer that typically seen, without any of the usual roughness or porosity. A number of small abrasions on both sides are consistent with the grade. High grade specimens are non-existent, with the finest known barely reaching Extremely Fine. Design weakness inside the left part of the wreath is typical of most known examples. Take a look at this important half cent, for we believe you will find it to be a most attractive representative of the die marriage.
