Description

1809 C-1, B-2 Half Cent, VF25
Rare Early Die State

1809 1/2 C C-1, B-2, FS-301, High R.4, VF25 PCGS. Ex: Jon D. Lusk Collection. Manley Die State 1.0. Fuhrman State 1. The reverse has a delicate die crack through the tops of MERI although that crack does not continue through CA on this rare early die state piece. Richard Picker discovered this variety in 1954. Nearly 30 years later, Walter Breen rated the variety as High R.6, and in 1998, Ronald Manley gave a High R.5 rating. William Eckberg suggested a population of 65 or more in 2019 and Ed Fuhrman suggested an R.4 rating in 2021. The vast majority of those identified in the last 40 years are extensively worn, and the present pleasing VF25 example remains one of the better known pieces. The tan and olive-brown obverse shows a few scattered marks. The reverse combines olive, chocolate-brown, and mahogany.
