Description
1809/6 C-5, B-5 Half Cent, MS65 Brown
Rare Intermediate Die State
1809/6 1/2 C 9 Over Inverted 9, C-5, B-5, R.1, MS65 Brown
NGC. Manley Die State 2.9 with the dentilation most gone. Faint
clash marks are visible inside the wreath, and the end of the stem
is complete and sharp. This is an exceptional example of the
blundered date that is routinely assigned the incorrect
nomenclature of "9 over 6." However, such an overdate is impossible
since the Classic Head design was not yet conceived in 1806. On
this die, the engraver incorrectly entered the final digit upside
down, and then correct his error, creating the "9 over Inverted 9"
die blunder. This piece exhibits glossy brown surfaces with
cartwheel luster, combining golden-brown, chestnut-brown, and tan.
Our EAC grade MS62. Census: 0 in 65 Brown, 0 finer (3/16).
