Description
1811 C-1 Half Cent, SP64 Brown
One of Two Known in Specimen
One of The Three Finest of the Variety
1811 1/2 C Wide Date, C-1, B-1, Low R.4, SP64 Brown NGC.
Fuhrman Die State 1, the usual state. Electric-periwinkle, grape,
and red-russet regions erupt under a light to form a beautiful,
eye-catching patina. Full mirroring is present, and the special
care taken in this piece's production has eliminated any striking
weakness. An old mark above Liberty at the top of the obverse is
vital for pedigree purposes, and is assisted by a small nick at
stars 9 and 10 as well as several spots between S O on the
reverse. This piece ranks among the three finest 1811 C-1 half cents. It was first traced in the famous Lorin G. Parmelee Collection in 1890 and found its way to the holdings of Chicago super-collector Virgil M. Brand. According to documents held in the ANS, the Brand Estate ultimately sold this piece in December 1951. Recent research conducted by Saul Teichman has filled in the pedigree gaps between these two offerings, revealing reposes in the Steigerwalt, Page, and Hall cabinets as well, who all obtained it by private treaty. This coin has only been offered publicly two other times since 1951: in the Brobston Fixed Price List in 1963, and in our 2021 sale of the Donald Partrick Collection, alongside the other known Specimen 1811 half cent, also graded SP64. This piece's reappearance just five years after its last sale is unique among its ownership history, and collectors should take advantage of this rare opportunity to add their name to this piece's all-star pedigree. Census: 2 in SP64 Brown, 0 finer (11/25).
