Description

Rare and Important 1831 Original Half Cent

1831 AU 50 PCGS. Original. B-1, C-1, High R.6. Even chocolate-brown surfaces with minor discoloration scattered about and a small patch of porosity between the second T in STATES and the wreath. Breen's roster of 1831 half cents includes an example sold in a 1972 Stack's auction to Roger Cohen that, in our opinion, is this coin. In addition to "minor porosity," Breen mentions "a small scratch on (the) lower chin line (and a) nick above (the) dentils directly below (the) ribbons on (the) reverse." Perhaps 15 to 20 are known of these originals, plus a handful of proofs. Population: 1 in 50, 1 finer (12/98).
