(1811-15) HT-124 Planters Bank Counterstamp, AU55
Stamped on Cut-Quarter of Eight Reales
(1811-15) New Orleans, Louisiana, Planters Bank, HT-124, R.6,
AU55 NGC. Counterstamps on quarter of 8 Reales. Brunk obverse
B, reverse 3. Perhaps two-thirds of the punch on each side is
legible, the balance being indistinct. The script PB is fully
present, and nearly all of the eagle is complete. The PB
counterstamps were the Planters Bank's guarantee of the value of
these pieces. For a long time, and as recently as 30 years ago, the PB counterstamp was attributed to the firm of Puech, Bein & Company. Robert Leonard's research provided proof that these pieces were actually countermarked by Planters Bank who made large deposits at the Philadelphia Mint in 1815 and 1817, the deposits including considerable quantities of cut money. They requested quarter dollars, the same value as these cut pieces, in return. Due to the size of the 1815 deposit, the vast majority of quarters minted that year were delivered to Planters Bank in New Orleans.
