    Description

    (1835) HT-181B John J. Adams Token, VF30
    Likely Unique Taunton, Massachusetts Overstrike

(1835) Taunton, Massachusetts, John J. Adams, Low-301A, HT-181B, W-MA-320-10j, R.9, VF30 NGC. Silver, Lettered edge. This piece is extraordinary and most likely unique. The running boar reverse is stamped on the obverse of an 1811 O-105A half dollar. Pleasing pewter-gray surfaces show hints of iridescent toning. Inexplicably called German silver in A Guide Book of Hard Times Tokens. It should properly be attributed as W-MA-320-10f. It is said that John J. Adams was a cousin of President John Adams, although the cataloger has not verified that relationship.
Ex: New York Public Library Sale (Bowers and Ruddy, 10/1982), lot 3015; Donald G. Partrick.
