Only Four Known
1838 Am I Not a Man & a Brother, Low-54A, HT-82, W-11-725a, High
R.7, AU53 NGC. Copper, plain edge. This is the Howland Wood
discovery piece that ranks as the second finest of four known
1838-dated slave tokens. Low-54A was first published in the June
1912 issue of The Numismatist and exhibited at the 1912 ANA
Convention in Rochester, New York. The closely related female slave token, Low-54, is frequently encountered as is the undated male slave token of the 18th century British conder token series. Dies for this 1838-dated Low-54a were likely engraved by the same individual who prepared dies for Low-54. In addition to the June 1912 article, other articles about this token appeared in The Numismatist of April 1957, the TAMS Journal of April 1986, and the TAMS Journal of June 1967.
In The True Hard Times Tokens, Dr. Robert A. Schuman provides a detailed census of the three examples known to him when his reference was published. Schuman owns the finest known from the Boyd and Ford collections. This piece is the second finest, and Eric P. Newman owned the third finest that originated with John and Frank Lighthouse. The fourth example and fourth finest was discovered in Canada shortly before its appearance at auction in 2011.
Eric P. Newman's detailed research that was published in the 1995 Coinage of the Americas Conference proceedings on tokens presented contemporary evidence for the slave tokens and identified their maker as a New Jersey artist. Newman identified two New Jersey token makers, James G. Moffett and John Gibbs, both of Belleville.
Scattered marks appear on the obverse of this token that exhibits pleasing walnut-brown surfaces. Although slightly weak at the centers, this piece is nicely centered and certainly attractive. An important historical token of exceptional rarity, this piece will be a nice addition to an advanced collection.
