Description

Kalakaua I copper Proof Pattern 1/4 Dollar 1883 PR65 Brown PCGS, San Francisco mint, Medcalf-Russell 2CPC-2. CAC Approved. Obv. Bust of Kalakaua I right. Rev. Crowned shield from the Hawaiian Coat of Arms dividing 1/4-D. The strike is superb, with even reddish-brown patina. The surfaces are near mark-free and the fields show the Proof surfaces when examined under a nice light. A superb example of this extremely rare Pattern issue. This is the finest example we can reference, and one of only two pieces saold in the last 20 years, the other being a proof 62 example.

These copper pattern issues were struck in 1/8 Dollar, 1/4 Dollar, 1/2 Dollar, and 1 Dollar denominations from the same dies used for the 1883 silver coins. These were struck after the silver issues were produced. Eighteen sets of the copper issues were produced.
Ex. The Forsythe Collection, sold in May,2012 by Ira and Larry Goldberg for $17,250.
