Description

MCMVII Saint-Gaudens Twenty, MS61
High Relief, Flat-Rim Variety, CAC

1907 $20 High Relief, Flat Rim, MS61 PCGS. CAC. The limited mintage of 12,367 pieces and the widely acknowledged beauty of its design ensure that the 1907 High Relief Saint-Gaudens double eagle remains highly desirable by all serious numismatists. The design was produced in two major varieties, with the first strikes from August of 1907 producing the Wire Edge variety that introduced "finning" on the edges of the rims. The Treasury Secretary ordered that the fins be removed, and in mid-December the Mint began striking the corrected pieces without the fins, referred to as the Flat Rim variety.

The splendid honey-gold surfaces of this Flat Rim High Relief double eagle showcase soft, satiny mint luster on razor-sharp devices. Interestingly, even though the Mint maintained that fins were removed, many Flat Rim coins still show the finning characteristic, and the bottom reverse of this example shows remnants of a thin wire-rim along the edge. While scattered marks typical of MS61 examples are present, none are significant and these minor imperfections do little to detract from the beautiful design. CAC endorsed. Listed among the 100 Greatest U.S. Coins (#31 in 6th edition).(Registry values: N4719)
