    Description

    1907 High Relief Twenty, MS62
    Scarcer Flat Rim Variant

1907 $20 High Relief, Flat Rim MS62 NGC. The beautiful High Relief Saint-Gaudens double eagle is known in two varieties, one with a wire rim, or fin, around the rims of the coin and the other with a flat rim. The wire rim was formed by metal extruding through the space between the collar and the die when the coin was struck and it was considered undesirable (by Mint officials) because it made the coins difficult to stack. After considerable experimentation, it was found that adjusting the dimensions and milling of the planchets eliminated the problem. The resulting Flat Rim examples are much more elusive than their Wire Rim counterparts today.

The present coin is an attractive MS62 example of the Flat Rim variant with sharply detailed design elements and lustrous yellow and rose-gold surfaces. A few minor signs of contact explain the grade, the worst being a long thin scratch through the right (facing) obverse rays.(Registry values: N4719)
