    Description

    1907 High Relief Twenty, MS62+
    Scarcer Flat Rim Variant

1907 $20 High Relief, Flat Rim MS62+ PCGS Secure. Early examples of Augustus Saint-Gaudens' acclaimed High Relief double eagle featured a wire rim, or fin, around the edge of the coin, formed when metal was extruded between the collar and the die during the striking process. To eliminate this problem, adjustments were made to the milling and dimensions of the planchets. This resulted in the famous Flat Rim variant, which is actually much more elusive than its Wire Rim counterpart.
This high-end MS62 specimen shows the sharply detailed three-dimensional central design elements expected of the High Relief issue. Like all examples seen, the strike is a bit softer on the peripheral devices because of the curvature of the fields. The lustrous yellow and greenish-gold surfaces show only minor contact marks. An attractive example of the most beautiful U.S. coin design.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 26F2, PCGS# 9136)
