1907 High Relief, MS62
1907 $20 High Relief, Flat Rim MS62 PCGS. On December 14,
1907, Mint Director Leach ordered "that the operators be instructed
to work with extreme care so as to prevent the excessive burrs on
the edges of the coin." The "burrs" as Leach called them, or "fins"
as other Mint personnel termed them, are more affectionately known
by collectors as "wire rims." The thin rim of metal Mint officials
found so troublesome was virtually eliminated in the final
production runs of High Reliefs. The only trace of a "fin" on this
coin is from 5 to 9 o'clock on the reverse. The surfaces on this
bright, satiny example are minimally marked for the grade. Sharply
struck throughout, as one would expect from three blows from a
values: N4719) (NGC ID# 26F2, PCGS# 9136)
