MCMVII High Relief Twenty Dollar, MS62
    Flat Rim Variant

1907 $20 High Relief, Flat Rim MS62 PCGS. After a series of unsatisfactory results from testing Saint-Gaudens' high relief design, President Roosevelt wrote to the sickly sculptor. The letter, dated May 8, 1907, requested Saint-Gaudens venture from Cornish, New York to Philadelphia to make the appropriate modifications to the models. In his reply, the artist expressed his regret for not being able to make the trip: "Greatly as I should like to please you, I feel that I cannot now model another design in profile for the Twenty Dollar gold piece." He continued, "I am grieved that the striking of the die did not bring better results. Evidently it is no trifling matter to make Greek art conform with modern numismatics." By the end of 1907, however, the matter would be resolved, as evidenced by the coin here offered.

This beautiful Flat Rim representative, which replaced the thought-to-be defective Wire Rim coins, offers lustrous orange-gold surfaces without any singularly distracting marks. Boldly impressed and highly appealing.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 26F2, PCGS# 9136)
