1907 Twenty Dollar High Relief, MS63
    Flat Rim Variant

1907 $20 High Relief, Flat Rim, MS63 NGC. Just a few months after the Saint-Gaudens High Relief double eagles were released to banks and sub-Treasuries, the January 1908 issue of The Numismatist prophetically wrote: "It is too early yet to tell just what the prices of the pieces will settle down to, but there is no doubt that the new twenty will command a substantial premium and that as time goes on the piece will gradually increase in rarity." With only 12,367 coins distributed, many available examples were hoarded or quickly flipped by profiteers, with collectors and speculators recognizing immediately their beauty and potential numismatic significance. Today, that tradition continues. The MCMVII High Relief double eagle remains one of the most admired and sought-after issues in American coinage. This is one of the later pieces produced, as seen by the so-called flat rim around the margins. This was done to minimize (hopefully eliminate) the "fin" or wire rim that Mint personnel saw as a strike defect. The surfaces are bright and satiny with a faint, but even layer of reddish patina over each side.(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 26F2, PCGS# 9136)
