Satiny MS64 Flat Rim High Relief

1907 $20 High Relief, Flat Rim MS64 PCGS. Not widely recognized (or understood) until recent years, Flat Rim High Reliefs are significantly scarcer than their Wire Rim counterparts. After several frustrating years, Augustus Saint-Gaudens was finally able to focus his energies on delivering the models for ten and twenty dollar gold coins. Demands on his time continued until his death in August 1907, but his assistant, Henry Hering, was able to conduct business with the Mint and ably represent the late sculptor's intentions. Saint-Gaudens was a sculptor and one can fully appreciate his abilities as such when viewing the High Relief twenties. However, he was not aware or interested in the needs of high-speed coinage production--his idea of a circulating double eagle was the Ultra High Relief. The so-called Very High Relief coins were a considerable step down from Saint-Gaudens' lofty goals, and yet they remain the most artistically accomplished coins of all time. This particular piece displays the usual bright, satiny mint luster and yellow-gold coloration. The non-Gem grade is accounted for by the presence of a vertical mark across the eagle's tail feathers and a tiny green spot of unknown origin above Liberty's right (facing) arm.(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 26F2, PCGS# 9136)
