1907 Flat Rim High Relief Double Eagle
Beautifully Preserved MS64

1907 $20 High Relief, Flat Rim, MS64 PCGS. Saint-Gaudens went through several variations of his gold coin designs before arriving at the final models that were cast and then used to produce the Ultra High Relief patterns and High Relief circulation coinage. In Numismatic Art in America, Cornelius Vermeule writes:

"The obverse of the double eagle also shows degrees of alteration and development, none of them related immediately to any human model. In the first finished study, a form of feathery headdress seems to have been inserted discreetly behind the windswept hair of the winged Liberty. The whole surface is unified by removal of the wings and increased emphasis in the sun's rays thrusting out from the disc just visible behind the Capitol. Greek sources for Liberty's costume have been strengthened in the second three-dimensional design, where heavier folds and lines of drapery were gathered together and then flattened out to reveal fleshy contours in a fashion practiced to the same full degree at Pergamon or on Rhodes after 200 B.C. Almost overt in their dependence on Hellenistic antiquity, the $10 and $20 gold coins designed by Saint-Gaudens still managed to emerge as perhaps the greatest statements of Americanism in the official minor arts."

This Choice Flat Rim example of the High Relief coin beautifully displays Saint-Gaudens' handiwork. It is sharp and devoid of noteworthy contact marks, with rich honey-gold color and pleasing overall eye appeal. Scarcer than its Wire Rim counterpart.(Registry values: N7079)
