Charming 1907 High Relief Twenty
Flat Rim, Choice Mint State

1907 $20 High Relief, Flat Rim MS64 PCGS. As a sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens had a special talent for creating motion and drama in his art. His full creativity and genius can be seen in his bas-reliefs, where his use of both realism and naturalism make these works seem more like a painting than the traditional bas-reliefs done by previous designers. This genius for creating motion and drama can be seen on the twenty dollar gold piece that he worked on intermittently from 1905 until his death in August 1907. The figure of Liberty strides confidently forward toward the viewer with the rays of the sunrise behind, clearly symbolizing the dawn of the American century.
The irony is Saint-Gaudens and Theodore Roosevelt saw America as a rising power on the world stage, but Saint-Gaudens' own future was ultimately cut short by stomach cancer. Nevertheless, this forward-looking coin expressed the optimism the sculptor felt toward America at the dawn of the 20th century, though he would not live to see the High Relief coins, such as this Flat Rim example, that are his greatest legacy. The yellow-orange surfaces of this near-Gem are smooth and lightly patinated. The strike on the sculpted devices is characteristically sharp, and only a few wispy faults preclude an even finer designation.(Registry values: N7079)
