1907 High Relief Double Eagle, MS65
Flat Rim, CAC Approved
An Enduring Monument

1907 $20 High Relief, Flat Rim, MS65 NGC. CAC. There may be no greater expression of the impact of Augustus Saint-Gaudens' works than that spoken by New York Mayor McClellan at the memorial exercises for the late sculptor held in that city in February 1908. McClellan's speech was lengthy and touch on several of Saint-Gaudens' works, but his words regarding the Sherman Monument are most significant. The mayor said, in part:

"Saint-Gaudens in his Sherman has sung the last canto of his epic of the civil war. The Sherman has been criticized for being over-refined, over-spiritualized. But is it? It is true that it is a monument to the bluff old soldier we knew; but it is something more, far more than that. It is a monument to the greater glory of a great people. It is the spirit, the soul of a nation, etherealized and idealized, marching triumphant to victory that the Union might be saved, and that then, forever, there might be peace."

McClellan later added:

"The lasting history of a nation is recorded in its monuments. Long after the printed story of a people lies unread upon the shelf, long after their very traditions have ceased to interest, their monuments endure, telling of the civilization and the lives of men who have long passed away. ... It was Saint-Gaudens' self-suppression, his absorption in his subject, the spirit of reverence with which he treated the past that make him not only our greatest sculptor, but one of our great historians. His style is so pure, so free from heaviness or coarseness, so calm in its power, his art so perfect, his spirit so refined and his soul so lofty that his personality will live as that of a great American."

Saint-Gaudens' double eagle, in its High Relief form, has indeed endured as a monument of American history, and as the sculptor's final work of his hand. Behind the numismatic appeal, the beauty of the art, and glitter of its gold, the coin embodies the ideals of America in much the same way as the Sherman Monument, merely through an alternative figure. Not a war general is depicted, but a lady of Liberty. And not a figure of conflict, but one peace, bearing an olive branch and torch. American symbolism, especially in portrayals of Liberty, have long been associated with United States coinage, although perhaps never so purely and free from heaviness as on Saint-Gaudens' High Relief double eagle.

This Gem, CAC-approved Flat Rim coin displays a full rendering of the design and motifs, bathed in smooth, satiny butter-gold luster touched by merely a few small marks. The Flat Rim variant is scarcer than its Wire Rim counterpart, and in Gem condition, with CAC endorsement, such coins are borderline rare. This is a stunning example of this beloved coin.(Registry values: N7079)
