Extraordinary 1907 High Relief Flat Rim Twenty Dollar

1907 $20 High Relief, Flat Rim MS65 NGC. Struck with five blows from the working dies on the Mint's medal press, as were all High Relief Double Eagles, this coin displays exquisite sharpness of definition over all features. It also exhibits a flat rim, a feature that differentiates it from most survivors of this issue, which display a wire rim. According to Walter Breen, approximately 3,000 High Relief Double Eagles were produced in November 1907 with a flat rim. The balance of the mintage, about 8,250 pieces, were struck in December of the same year with a wire rim. Today, some numismatists disagree with this theory. It is now thought that the "Wire Rim" coins were initially struck and it was found that they wouldn't stack properly due to the extra metal at the peripheries. This was corrected resulting in the later, "Flat Rim" variety, and the scarcer of the two types.
The surface quality of this coin is truly extraordinary, and both sides retain their virtually blemish-free sheen even under close inspection with a loupe. Bright with dominant golden-honey color, some faint golden-rose highlights are evident as the coin turns away from the light. The swirling striations (as produced) in the fields are indicative of the issue, and Breen asserts that their differing patterns can be used to identify the various working dies that the Mint used for this issue. A tiny mark on the eagle's breast is noted solely for accuracy.(#9136) (Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 26F2, PCGS# 9136)
