    1907 High Relief Twenty, AU55
    Pronounced High Relief Feature

1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim AU55 NGC. Unlike many High Reliefs that are termed Wire Rim, this piece shows abundant evidence of just such a thin rim of extruded metal. It is especially evident around the rim on the obverse. It has often been written about, but still bears repeating that this wire rim, seen as a desirable and collectible aspect of the coin today, was considered a flaw at the time these pieces were struck. In fact, Superintendent Landis wrote a scathing letter on December 6, 1907 to Mint Director Frank Leach:

"I was exceedingly humiliated today to have the Secretary of the Treasury call attention to the excessive burr, or fin, on one of the new double eagle pieces now being distributed."

The "problem" of the burr, or wire rim, was only partially solved before the limited production of High Relief twenties ceased. In addition to a noticeable wire rim, this piece also displays bright reddish-tinted surfaces with considerable mint luster remaining. Only slight abrasions are noted, and those are only evident with a magnifier. Excellent value.(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 26F2, PCGS# 9135)
