1907 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle, MS61
High Relief Design With Wire Rim

1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim MS61 NGC. The coins of Augustus Saint-Gaudens have always been desirable among numismatists, but recently the artist has experienced a surge in popularity among art historians. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, for example, recently conducted an exhibition of many of Saint-Gaudens' works, including pieces from the American Numismatic Society collection. According to the museum, "this exhibition offers a reappraisal of Saint-Gaudens's groundbreaking role in the history of late nineteenth-century American sculpture and the Aesthetic Movement." Similarly, in a 2003 issue of the American Art Review, Henry J. Duffy speaks to the growing interest in the artist's work, "Today Saint-Gaudens is once again recognized as a central figure in the art of the developing nation, bridging the gap between nineteenth and twentieth centuries and laying the groundwork for what was to come."
The popularity of the Saint-Gaudens double eagle design prompted the U.S. Mint to issue Ultra High Relief gold coins in 2009 based on Saint-Gaudens' original plaster models. While these pieces are impressive, they lack the charm of the full-size 1907 High Relief twenties. There is no substitute for these originals, which have been admired by collectors since they were first issued.
The present coin is a pleasing MS61 example of the Wire Rim type, with a sharp strike and attractive yellow-gold surfaces. Hints of red accent the lightly marked fields, adding to the outstanding eye appeal.(Registry values: N4719)
