Description

1907 High Relief Double Eagle, MS62
Wire Rim, Luminous Surfaces

1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim, MS62 NGC. The reported mintage of MCMVII High Relief double eagles was 12,367 pieces, from which about 8,000 pieces survive today according to Roger Burdette's research. While great excitement existed when the first High Relief pieces were distributed, public interest quickly waned and the High Relief coins could be purchased from retail sellers for $24 to $25 each shortly after issue. Demand remained modest until the middle 1940s, when retail prices reached $150 for high-grade examples. Today, although MCMVII pieces are always available, demand far exceeds supply and there is no shortage of bidders when any High Relief twenty appears at auction. This MS62 coin features a nearly complete Wire Rim around the obverse and about 75% of the reverse. The characteristic satin-smooth, basined fields surrounding Liberty striding forward and the eagle in flight are boldly struck. Attractive, orange-gold surfaces exhibit pleasing olive and reddish-gold accents. This coin retains softly glowing, pleasing mint luster. No significant contact marks or meaningful abrasions are present -- far less than expected for the grade -- including a few small irregularities on the exposed Wire Rim. This coin's overall eye appeal is strong for its grade level and will enhance the quality of any well-formed collection.(Registry values: N4719)
