    1907 Wire Rim Twenty, MS62
    Bright Yellow-Gold Surfaces

1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim MS62 NGC. Both President Theodore Roosevelt and sculptor/designer Augustus Saint-Gaudens felt it would be inappropriate, even blasphemous, to include the motto IN GOD WE TRUST on the new double eagles. Saint-Gaudens considered employing the motto AEQUUM CUIQUE, as he had in his design for Roosevelt's 1905 inaugural medal. The Latin phrase, loosely translated, means "to each, that which is equitable" or "a square deal for every man." The square deal was a direct reference to Roosevelt's domestic policy regarding conservation, consumer protection, and controlling corporate greed. Although AEQUUM CIUQUE was never used on any of the eagles or double eagles, these High Relief twenties still speak to that trust-busting era of American progressivism, with Liberty striding boldly forward into the 20th century. This is a bright yellow-gold example that does not show any mentionable contact marks on either side, but close examination reveals a couple of shallow marks on the rims, which most likely account for the grade.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 26F2, PCGS# 9135)
