1907 Wire Rim High Relief Twenty
    Remarkably Clean MS62

1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim MS62 PCGS. CAC. In an 1899 letter to his wife, Augusta, Augustus Saint-Gaudens made two comments that reveal much about his self-perception. At the end of the letter that mostly deals with his work habits in the Paris studio and travel with his son, Homer, he states:

"I've been tearing up a lot of copies of my old letters lately and they all seem inane. ... The only parts of them that were readable were in your handwriting. Evidently I must content myself with expression in bronze. That makes me mad for we always wish for what is around the corner out of reach."

Numerous letters written by Saint-Gaudens survived the 1904 studio fire, but the contents of most of these are known only to specialists. However, he correctly observed that he best expressed himself in bronze. The Sherman group at the entrance to Central Park incorporates a figure of Liberty leading General Sherman. This figure was adapted and reconfigured slightly for use on the obverse of the twenty dollar gold piece, and is best rendered on the 1907 High Relief. This is a splendid example that fully shows the viewer the striding figure in high relief Saint-Gaudens intended. The surfaces are remarkably free from the expected contact marks, the only mentionable defects are a couple of shallow planchet flakes to the left of the eagle's neck on the reverse.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 26F2, PCGS# 9135)
