MCMVII Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle, MS62+
High Relief, Wire Rim

1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim, MS62+ PCGS. The High Relief Saint-Gaudens double eagles were originally struck with the intention of bringing forward all of the immaculate details that Augustus Saint-Gaudens included within his High Relief design. As these pieces were struck, planchet metal formed into a fin around the rims that were not consistently flat. The resulting coins did not stack uniformly, and the planchet upset had to be adjusted to alleviate the problem. High Relief coins struck post-upset adjustment are the Flat Rim pieces known today. However, the fix did not resolve the other limitation of the High Relief design, namely, the time it took to produce. The Mint therefore transitioned to a low relief design suitable for mass coinage, ending the production of High Relief double eagles at just 12,367 pieces.

This Plus-graded High Relief example exhibits sharply defined devices on warm straw-gold hues and luminous satiny luster, typical of the High Relief issue. The fin is mostly visible along the obverse border, with just the lower right of the reverse slightly low. A few grade-consistent abrasions are visible under a loupe as are a couple of tiny, harmless resin-like spots under Liberty's left-facing ear and on her left-facing hip in the fold of her gown. The overall eye appeal is outstanding for the grade, and this MS62+ double eagle is deserving of consideration for type collections.(Registry values: N4719)
