    1907 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle, MS62
    High Relief, Wire Rim Variant

1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim MS62 PCGS. The issuance of Saint-Gaudens' High Relief double eagles coincided with the Panic of 1907, the two being connected by Thomas Elder in the December 1907 -- January 1908 edition of his Monthly Magazine. Elder explained that contrary to popular belief, there was a direct correlation between economic crises and an increase in the procurement of rare coins: "... on the contrary the 'hoarders' if there are any in our ranks, seem to think that if hoarding is to be done, they will hoard their cash in the shape of rare coins." He noted that the "discussion of the new issues of the eagle and double eagle seems also to have helped. Why, the public simply went wild over the first issue of St. Gaudens' new $20, and quickly bought up the entire issue of about $6,000 before the coin collectors had a fair opportunity to add the piece to their collections." Elder's figures are a little off, as $6,000 face value would only be about 300 double eagles, and the mintage of High Reliefs was about 40 times that figure. Still, collector demand continues to make the Saint-Gaudens High Relief twenty one of the most desirable issues in the American series to this day.

This impressive MS62 example shows the Wire Rim, or fin, around the edge of the coin, seen on about three quarters of the High Relief twenties. The design elements are sharply detailed, as expected, and both sides radiate vibrant mint luster. The pleasing orange-gold surfaces show only the minimum number of minor contact marks for the grade.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 26F2, PCGS# 9135)
