    MCMVII High Relief Double Eagle
    Wire Rim, MS63+

1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim MS63+ NGC. Charles Barber is often accredited with forcing an end to the High Relief Saint-Gaudens double eagle, citing limitations of the coining presses and reduced efficiency. However, his arguments were based on sound fact: with three to five die impressions needed to bring up the motifs, high-capacity production for circulation was almost impossible with the resources available to the Mint in the early 20th century; moreover, the cost of such coinage was not economically feasible, one coin now requiring the manpower and time that would have produced three to five examples of the earlier Liberty Head type.

Coinage of the High Relief type was ceased after a mintage of just 12,367 pieces, and the presses were fitted with dies that featured a newly approved low-relief version of significantly reduced artistic merit. The High Relief coins were instantly popular among collectors, as the sculptural appearance was one that would never again be produced on a circulating coin. This Plus-graded Select example showcases fully rendered motifs, with rich, satiny luster and minimal abrasions for the grade. A lovely example of this iconic coin.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 26F2, PCGS# 9135)
