1907 High Relief Twenty Dollar, MS63
Wire Rim
Part of a 'Greater Enjoyment in Beauty'

1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim MS63 PCGS. CAC. In his Reminiscences, Augustus Saint-Gaudens son, Homer, recalled the later years of his father's life:

"Then, at last, through the strongest period of Saint-Gaudens life there rose in this land a final understanding of the presence of a recognized national art. Of course even now the average American can hardly be said to have developed into a satisfactory critic, but from the time of the Chicago Fair he became anxious to learn, and moreover succeeded in learning both to take greater enjoyment in beauty and to give greater time to that enjoyment."

Part of that recognized national art was the Sherman Monument at the south entrance to Central Park. The secondary figure in that monument was the figure of Liberty whose striding figure was adapted to the twenty dollar gold piece in 1907 and produced in high relief. It may fairly be said that this coin did more to further "greater enjoyment in beauty" than any other object in early 20th century America. This is a bright yellow-gold example whose satiny mint luster is barely affected by contact.
