1907 Wire Rim High Relief Twenty, MS63
Rich, Satin-Like Surfaces

1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim, MS63 PCGS. Augustus Saint-Gaudens' painter-friend, Will Low, wrote a criticism of Saint-Gaudens' Amor Caritas, a masterwork that others had criticized as "not sculpture." His comments apply equally to Saint-Gaudens' later work on the High Relief double eagle:
"Here is a gallery filled with modern sculpture, some of it living, and some of it dead. The greater part shows technical ability of a high order, but how infrequently the quality of expression is of equal import, and how few that we cannot trace back to some previous work. Here is a work pregnant with meaning; of a symbolism that appeals to all; that is novel and personal in its presentation; whose facture we hardly consider, so appropriate are the technical methods suited to its theme. Our friend denies that it is sculpture, it may be something better; it is individual, it is beautiful, beyond dispute it is Art."

That is certainly how the design of the twenty dollar High Relief has been regarded over the past century: "beyond dispute it is Art." The sculptural intention of the design is fully evident on this piece with no obvious surface defects. The mint luster is thick and satiny, as always. A remarkable example of Saint-Gaudens' best-known work. Among the 100 Greatest U.S. Coins (6th edition).
