Select 1907 High Relief, Wire Rim
    Likely America's Most Popular Design

1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim MS63 PCGS. The seemingly perfect proportions of the Liberty figure on the High Relief twenty were actually the result of years of working and reworking the figure of Liberty in the Sherman group, Saint-Gaudens' last monumental sculpture, located at the entrance to New York's Central Park. Saint-Gaudens worked on the Sherman over 11 years, first in New York, then in Paris, and finally completing it in Cornish, New Hampshire. Even while it was being cast at the foundry in France, Saint-Gaudens was directing changes he wanted made in the final version. In Reminiscences, the sculptor's son recalled his father's penchant for perfection:

"Occasionally an inspired youth would remark that he never measured his work, upon which my father would promptly rage, for he said: 'You will have trouble enough in producing good art as it is without scorning such mechanical means as you can take. Beside, continuous measuring will train your eye to see accurately. Nobody can give the length of a foot off-hand as well as a carpenter.' "

The results of this meticulous attention to detail, length of features, and proportionality of the figure of Liberty is abundantly clear on both the double eagle as well as the Sherman from which it is taken.
This greenish-gold Select example shows a wire rim around about one-quarter of each side. There are few signs of contact save for a curving patch of marks in the left (facing) obverse field. The mint luster is intact but a tad subdued. Certified in a green-label holder.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 26F2, PCGS# 9135)
