High Relief MCMVII Twenty Dollar, MS64
Complete Wire Rim Around Each Side

1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim MS64 NGC. Most works of sculpture offer the viewer a realistic representation of the subject. Augustus Saint-Gaudens' career was built on such realistic representations both in sculptural form and his bas-reliefs. Only a few works offer a kinetic aspect. Unsurprisingly these are his best-known works, such as The Puritan, the Sherman Monument, the Shaw Memorial, and of course, the High Relief twenty dollar gold piece. The striding figure of Liberty on the double eagle bears a striking resemblance to the Puritan and the Angel of Victory from the Sherman Monument. Each work uses this sense of movement to bring the viewer into the subject depicted. This kinetic sense is further enhanced by the coin's high relief. This three-dimensional effect enlivens the striding figure of Liberty even more.
The high relief seen on this piece certainly reinforces the kinetic aspect intended by Saint-Gaudens. The surfaces are bright orange-gold and satiny as usual. The wire rim or "fin" as it was called by Mint employees is especially pronounced on the obverse and complete around each side. Both obverse and reverse are minimally abraded.(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 26F2, PCGS# 9135)
