MCMVII High Relief Twenty Dollar, MS64
    Wire Rim or 'Fin' Rim

1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim MS64 NGC. Thomas Elder and S.H. Chapman sent a letter on behalf of the ANA to President Theodore Roosevelt on December 10, 1907, expressing the Association's approval of the newly issued eagles and double eagles:

"We beg to express our high appreciation of your efforts resulting in the issuance of the beautiful eagle and double eagle by Saint Gaudens. These coins we regard as possessing high artistic merit though with some faults in detail and technique -- and as greatly superior to those of the old type, and as marking an advance in American numismatic art."

The faults in detail may refer to the striking difficulties posed by the High Relief coins, and it is possible that the technical faults denote the wire rim that encircled the borders. These were considered flaws at the time of striking, termed "finning" in Mint parlance. However, these qualms clearly fail to diminish the overall importance and appeal of the new issues, which received glowing reviews then as they do now. This is a bright, satiny example with glowing surfaces. The strike is strong, as expected, and there are no obvious or detracting contact marks on either side.
