Elegant High Relief, Wire Rim Twenty, MS64

1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim MS64 PCGS. CAC. Saint-Gaudens' High Relief twenty has been a numismatic icon for more than a century. Public enthusiasm for the coin was infectious and examples were selling for a premium as soon as the coin was released. Henry Chapman offered a specimen of the Wire Rim variety as lot 619 in his public auction sale of February 20, 1908. To quote from Chapman's lot description, "In great demand, and supply very small. $35 to $45 now being paid." Collector enthusiasm for this coin remains undimmed today. It is on the "must- have" lists of collectors from a wide range of disciplines, including those who collect no other gold coins!
The magnificent design that has inspired so much admiration was not easy to conceive, even for an artist of Saint-Gaudens' genius. Roger Burdette relates the story of Saint-Gaudens' struggle in his acclaimed reference Renaissance of American Coinage 1905-1908. At different points in the design process, Saint-Gaudens considered an assortment of design elements that can only dismay admirers of his final masterpiece. Imagine Liberty wearing a Native American headdress (Theodore Roosevelt's suggestion) or having full, spreading, angel wings! Thankfully, Saint-Gaudens discarded these anachronisms and settled on the simple, majestic figure of Liberty with her torch and olive branch.
The present coin has the full strike expected on a High Relief. All details are sharp and crisp on both sides. The surfaces are free from distractions and are highlighted by unbroken, satiny mint luster. The rich, yellow-gold color of the obverse is complemented by subtle shades of magenta on the reverse. A beautiful, historic prize.(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 26F2, PCGS# 9135)
