Description

Near-Gem 1907 High Relief Double Eagle

1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim MS64 PCGS. This sharply detailed High Relief Saint-Gaudens double eagle is the Wire Rim variant, considered undesirable by Mint officials but highly collectible today. Current estimates suggest that the first 8,000 pieces of this design had a wire rim while the final 4,000 had the more desirable flat rim. This particular near-Gem specimen is highly lustrous yellow-gold with satiny surfaces. Both sides have subtle hints of green color. A few faint abrasions on the obverse and reverse surfaces keep it from a Gem grade classification. High Relief double eagles are undoubtedly the most beautiful American coins ever produced.

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
