    Gem 1907 High Relief Twenty
    Pleasing Wire Rim Variety

1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim MS65 PCGS. CAC. "What garlic is to salad, insanity is to art."
    --Augustus Saint-Gaudens

"Realism, Naturalism, Influenced by the Renaissance." These terms all apply to the sculpture of Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Another term that might well apply is "19th century." His sculpture transcended the throwback to Neoclassicism that was so popular for much of the 19th century; instead, he embraced Realism in a sense not practiced since Michelangelo. From the above quote it is easy to imagine what Saint-Gaudens' opinion would be of the sculpture of Alberto Giacometti, Constantin Brancusi, or Henry Moore. But these sculptors worked in and represented the 20th century. It is ironic that one of Saint-Gaudens' final commissions, the twenty dollar gold piece, is universally understood to represent the ascendancy of America on the world stage in the 20th century, yet his training and most of his works were accomplished in the 19th century. Nevertheless, he was able to combine the real with the ideal on the design for the double eagle, produce it in high relief format, and create an immediately recognizable icon for American progress and dominance for the 20th century. And Saint-Gaudens vision of America was produced when the new century was only seven years old.
These tangible remnants of Saint-Gaudens' vision for the new century have been collectible since they were first issued in 1907. The famous High Relief claims a limited mintage of just 12,367 pieces, and many consider this design the most beautiful ever conceived for an American coin. The coin offered here is a spectacular Gem, with razor-sharp definition on the central devices and lustrous yellow and greenish-gold surfaces. The Wire Rim feature was perceived as a problem for practical reasons, but numismatists have always prized the issue for its distinctive quality. Housed in a green label holder.
