MCMVII High Relief Double Eagle, MS65
Wire Rim, Beautifully Preserved
Victory in Liberty

1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim, MS65 PCGS. One of Augustus Saint-Gaudens' most memorable figures was his study of Winged Victory. Perhaps most famously the guiding figure of the New York monument honoring Civil War General William Tecumseh Sherman, variations of this allegorical figure were employed for other works by the sculptor as well. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, writing about their Winged Victory sculpture, state:
"... this winged allegorical figure is depicted as a triumphant guiding force. Her classicizing gown is emblazoned with an eagle, and she wears a crown of laurel and holds a palm frond-both traditional emblems of victory. The windblown pose recalls that of the Hellenistic marble "Nike of Samothrace" (Musée du Louvre, Paris). The principal model for Victory was Hettie Anderson, an African American woman who was a favored artists' model in New York during the 1890s."

For numismatists, the most famous adaptation of Saint-Gaudens' Victory was on the High Relief double eagle of 1907. Initial models for the design included large wings on the striding figure, rendering Liberty as essentially a reincarnation of the Sherman Monument's Victory, with variations given to her hair, the olive branch, and the addition of the torch to her outstretched hand. Ultimately, the wings were omitted, allowing the figure of Liberty on the coin to stand apart from her Victory counterpart.

This Gem Wire Rim example of the High Relief double eagle displays radiant, softly frosted mint luster with rich orange-gold and peach-honey coloration. Every design element is sharply defined, and neither side exhibits bothersome abrasions. Eye appeal is outstanding.(Registry values: N7079)
