    1907 High Relief, Gem Uncirculated
    Wire Rim Variant, Fully Defined

1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim MS65 PCGS. Fourteen months before his death, Augustus Saint-Gaudens was obviously a man who knew the end was near. Yet he continued to work while suffering from intestinal cancer. In June 1906 he wrote to illustrator and painter Edward A. Abbey:

"We are not dead yet. 'By Jingo' are we! If you were to see the establishment I have here, you would not think I was, although I am stretched out on a couch at this moment in the flickering sunlight. I will stick to it until I am finally stretched out. That's the only thing, after all. Work, I mean, not being stretched out! ... "

Saint-Gaudens continued his supervision of various sculptural projects from his couch until he died in August 1907. He frequently consulted with his assistant Henry Hering about the ongoing revisions to the designs for the ten and twenty dollar gold pieces. Hering represented Saint-Gaudens' concepts in the development of the coins, and after the sculptor's death he represented his widow's interests in the Mint's ongoing revisions to the two denominations. Henry Hering may well be said to be the guiding force behind the technical development and production of the High Relief twenties and their Rolled Rim and Wire Rim ten dollar counterparts. Hering carefully supervised the production of the High Relief twenties, but it ultimately fell to President Roosevelt to order the Mint to actually strike the coins. This is an exceptionally well-preserved example that displays the usual strong, satin-like luster, a faint tinge of reddish patina, and ever-so-few contact marks.(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 26F2, PCGS# 9135)
