    1907 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle, MS65
    High Relief, Wire Edge

1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim MS65 PCGS. Beginning in 1891, Augustus Saint-Gaudens had tangled on several occasions with the Mint's engraver Charles Barber. President Roosevelt promised if Saint-Gaudens would design new high-relief coinage based on those seen from ancient Greece, he would have the Mint produce them. Roosevelt emphasized his continuing interest in the project in a letter to Saint-Gaudens where he said, "You know, Saint-Gaudens, this is my pet crime."

Roosevelt did continue to be involved in the newly designed coins, even to the point of suggesting design changes. One design element he insisted on was a change in the way the eagle was depicted on gold coins. The president had spent years in the West and was familiar with eagles and how they appeared in the wild. He thought the eagle on contemporary gold coins looked like a grilled squab, and Roosevelt did not like grilled squabs -- there was never enough there for a full-grown man to eat. With Roosevelt's admission that the new coins were his "pet crime" and his involvement in the actual design details, Saint-Gaudens gained a powerful partner in his high-relief coinage adventure.

This delightful Gem is a fine representative of the resulting issue, which many consider the most beautiful U.S. coin design. The design elements are sharply detailed and a thin fin, or wire rim, can be seen around the edge of the coin. This feature is present on about three quarters of the known specimens, caused by metal extruding through the narrow gap between the die and collar when the coin was struck. The well-preserved orange-gold surfaces radiate vibrant mint luster, with terrific eye appeal.(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 26F2, PCGS# 9135)
