    Description

Exceptional Gem Uncirculated MCMVII High Relief Twenty

1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim MS65 PCGS. The wire rim is just a bit more than halfway complete around each side, as usual. This is a Gem by anyone's standards with rich, satiny mint luster and no significant marks on either side. The striking definition is complete on each side with even stronger details on the design elements than usually seen. Collectors of 20th century coinage are deeply indebted to President Theodore Roosevelt, who insisted that production of the late Augustus Saint-Gaudens' design for the double eagle proceed, even if it took all day to produce a single coin. The man behind the scenes was Henry Hering, Saint-Gaudens' assistant, who persevered against the machinations of Charles Barber to reduce the magnificence of the sculptor's design. Ultimately, Barber won, of course. After the 11,250+ High Reliefs were struck he reduced the design to conform with high-speed production methods, but not before the Mint struck what is generally considered the most beautiful coin ever produced.

Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
