A good thing is no better for being done quickly.

    --Augustus Saint-Gaudens

These were sentiments Saint-Gaudens formulated in his student days in Paris and ideas he later passed on to his own students. He demonstrated belief in these principles in his various monumental works, the most obvious example being the Shaw Memorial that required almost 14 years to complete. When it came to designing the ten and twenty dollar coins at the behest of Theodore Roosevelt, he took this same deliberate pace, much to the chagrin of the president. Beginning in early 1905, when Roosevelt first broached the subject with the sculptor, the coins were still not fully in production when Saint-Gaudens died in August 1907. Still, one cannot argue with Saint-Gaudens' belief that his unhurried pace produced a superior design.
This unhurried pace and well-thought-out design is especially evident on this magnificently well-preserved example. The surfaces are as close to perfect as any we have seen recently. Not only are they well-preserved, but there is enough added appeal that NGC also gave the piece its Star designation. Each side displays bright satiny mint luster, and there is just a hint of reddish patina present (unlike the usually seen strong presence of red). The strike details are complete in all areas, even showing complete separation of the lettering on the upper reverse from the rim. Simply breathtaking quality. Census: 28 in 67, 3 in 67 , 9 finer (8/12).(Registry values: N10218) (NGC ID# 26F2, PCGS# 9135)
