    1907 Proof High Relief Saint-Gaudens $20, PR62 NGC

1907 $20 High Relief PR62 NGC. Proof High Reliefs cannot be distinguished from their business strike counterparts by any special diagnostics other than surface texture and striking details. The proofs were probably struck with a couple of extra blows from the hydraulic press, bringing up extra details that are missing from business strikes. Characteristically, proofs all show broad, flat borders with razor sharp inner and outer edges. Additionally, the berries on the olive branch are fully rounded, all the pillars in the Capitol building are separated, and the eagle's tail feathers are crisp down to the ends. There are numerous swirling striations in the fields, evidence that the dies were extensively polished before striking. The currently offered example also shows a handful of noticeable contact marks on each side, limiting the coin's assigned grade, and the satiny surfaces have a rich, beautiful yellow-gold coloration. The outcome of the auction far exceeded my best hopes and would not likely have been as successful with out your sound advice on where to present the coin and how best to set the reserve. Throughout the process your availability , support and knowledge were exceptional.
